The Catholic Parishes of the Portland Peninsula & Islands are seeking a Director for the newly established Portland Catholic Center for Faith.  This exciting, newly created position will plan, coordinate, and carry out a wide variety of faith outreach, formation and enrichment activities for the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and the other parishes of the Portland Peninsula and Islands.

Reporting directly to the Pastor/Rector, the Director of the Center for Faith is a full time, exempt position that primarily works from the Pastoral Offices at the Cathedral in a collaborative ministerial environment with clergy and other pastoral staff.

Successful candidates possess a degree in Catholic theology and enthusiastically support the mission and teachings of the Catholic Church.  Experience in pastoral ministry and/or education is preferred.  Training and mentoring will be part of the orientation process.

Job Description

Position Description:  Exempt, 40hrs/wk.
Reports to:  Rector/Pastor.

PRIMARY FUNCTION OF THIS POSITION
Under the direction of the Rector/Pastor and in collaboration with parish clergy, staff and volunteers, the Director of the Portland Catholic Center for Faith plans, coordinates, and carries out faith formation and enrichment activities for the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and the other parishes of the Portland Peninsula and Islands.

MAJOR POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (essential functions)

• In close collaboration with the Rector/Pastor and other clergy, staff, and parishioners, continually reflects upon the social / spiritual context, identifying challenges and opportunities related to handing on and building up the Catholic faith in Greater Portland.
• Researches and develops creative approaches, strategies, and programming to assist Catholics and non-Catholics of every age to deepen their understanding of and commitment to the Gospel.
• Under the direction of the Rector/Pastor, plans and oversees a wide variety of faith enrichment programs, small faith sharing groups, bible studies, presentations, pilgrimages, retreats, conferences, and other faith formation activities and events serving various age and cultural groups.
• Promotes and documents all faith formation activities and events in the Portland Peninsula and Island Parishes in bulletins, websites, and on social media in collaboration with parish and diocesan communications staff.
• Recognizing their unique role in handing on the Catholic faith, facilitates parish clergy presence and involvement in all aspects of faith formation programming, activities, and events.
• Recruits, trains, and coordinates volunteer catechists to assist in faith formation programming for all age and cultural groups of the five parishes of the Portland Peninsula and Islands.
• Oversees the two-year sacramental preparation program for children in the 1^st and 2^nd grade, ensuring that all candidates are properly prepared according to the directives of the Pastor/Rector and Bishop.
• Organizes and directs parish faith formation classes and activities for K-8 students, working closely with catechists to serve the various cultural/language groups that make up the Portland Peninsula and Island Parishes.
• Ensures all sacraments of initiation celebrated in the Portland Peninsula and Island Parishes are properly documented and that sacramental books are properly stored and cared for.
• Collaborates with the Diocesan Office of Lifelong Faith Formation and faith formation staff in nearby parishes, working together on faith formation projects and events.
• Develops annual goals and objectives and works with the Director of Finance and Administration to formulate budgets for faith formation activities throughout the parishes.
• Attends staff meetings as needed/requested and collaborates regularly with other pastoral staff.
• Carries out other duties as assigned.

• Is a practicing Roman Catholic who is well-versed in Catholic teaching and tradition and enthusiastically supports the mission and purpose of the Church and parishes.
• Conducts work with a balance of attention to detail and strategic vision.
• Proactively engages others in a positive and friendly manner.
• Presents himself or herself professionally in correspondence and conversations.
• Has completed or will successfully complete within 90 days of start of employment the diocesan program “Protecting God’s Children.”
• Meets all of the employment policies specified in the Diocese of Portland “Cluster Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual.”
• Maintains confidentiality.
• Possesses and maintains a valid Maine driver’s license and is insurable.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Master’s degree in theology from a Catholic institution or other certificate and/or training in Catholic theology preferred. 
Extensive experience teaching, planning, and coordinating faith formation activities preferred.
Proficiency in and/or ability to learn Microsoft Office software required.
