The Catholic Parishes of the Portland Peninsula and Islands are seeking a full-time Director of Buildings & Grounds to oversee the beautiful and historic facilities of six the parish churches and rectories, including the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
Major responsibilities include coordination of repair and updating on all buildings, maintenance and ongoing improvement of all buildings and mechanical systems, supervision of departmental staff, coordination of vendors and construction projects, and creation and implementation of regular maintenance plans.
The successful candidate is a practicing Catholic who supports the mission of the Church, has extensive knowledge and experience working with buildings and contractors, and thrives in a collaborative and service-oriented work-environment. This position reports directly to the Rector of the Cathedral.

Job Description
Position Description: Exempt, 40hrs/wk.
Reports to: Rector/Pastor
PRIMARY FUNCTION OF THIS POSITION
Under the direction of the Rector/Pastor and in collaboration with parish staff and volunteers, the Director of Buildings and Grounds oversees ongoing maintenance and improvement of the churches and other physical plant of the Portland Peninsula and Island Parishes.
MAJOR POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (essential functions)
Observes and evaluates the physical condition of all parish structures on an ongoing basis, identifying and addressing any maintenance deficits or weaknesses in mechanical systems.
Oversees and supervises all maintenance and custodial staff employed by the Portland Peninsula and Island Parishes.
Builds relationships with professional contractors and craftspersons hired to carry out ongoing maintenance and larger capital improvements on parish properties, securing and analyzing bids, facilitating effective communication, and ensuring that work is carried out in a cost-effective and professional manner.
Creates and maintains written maintenance plans for parish structures, addressing regular and occasional maintenance requirements and considering long-term (5-25 year) maintenance plans for more significant capital improvements.
Consults parish calendars regularly to ensure that buildings are opened and closed, clean, and properly prepared for regular and occasional parish activities and events throughout the year.
Attends staff meetings as needed/requested and collaborates regularly with other pastoral staff.
Assists in planning and carrying out major liturgical functions as needed, collaborating with pastoral staff to prepare grounds and facilities.
Assist custodial staff in carrying out occasional maintenance projects on parish properties as needed, ensuring that work is carried out in a timely and professional manner.
Serves as primary physical plant liaison to lessees, tenants, and Diocesan property management staff, ensuring strong communication and collaboration.
Carries out other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS/SPECIFICATIONS
Is a practicing Roman Catholic who understands and enthusiastically supports the mission and purpose of the Church and parishes.

Presents himself or herself professionally in correspondence and conversations.
Has completed or will successfully complete within 90 days of start of employment the diocesan program “Protecting God’s Children.”
Meets all of the employment policies specified in the Diocese of Portland “Cluster Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual.”
Maintains confidentiality.
Possesses and maintains a valid Maine driver’s license and is insurable.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Experience building maintenance, and/or the trades is required.
Experience supervising staff and working in a collaborative environment is preferred.
Proficiency in and/or ability to learn Microsoft Office software required.
