These lay people are sometimes referred to as Eucharistic Ministers. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are delegated to this ministry by the Bishop of the Diocese of Portland. The delegation is for a renewable five-year period and is specific to our parishes.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion also serve by bringing communion to parishioners who reside in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, or in their own homes and unable to get to church. They also may assist the priest in distributing the Eucharist at Mass.
Candidates for this ministry are required to successfully undergo a background check as required by Diocesan policy and attend an informational session on protecting vulnerable adults, and to be approved by the Pastor and the Bishop's Office prior to beginning ministry.
