On the afternoon of July 12, a small group of altar servers, clergy, and volunteers, began their trek from the Cathedral down to the State Pier. Marching down India street, they carried with them a statue of Mother Mary, a small copper kettle, and straw and leaf bushels. As they arrived at the Pier, the Altar servers scooped up sea water into the copper kettle, which was then blessed by the priests.
Fr. Seamus Giesbach then began the ceremony which included prayers, readings, and song. The prayers were broadcast over shortwave radio so that boats who tuned in, could listen to the whole event.
After the prayers, the boats were then instructed to process down towards the pier to recieve the blessing. The priest, using the bushels, showered the oncoming boats with the blessed sea water. Spectators surrounded the pier, and watched boats of all shapes and sizes pass by and recieve a blessing.
Over 50 boats attented the event, and there was a sizable crowd that gathered on the pier for the ceremony.
