This weekend and next we have sacrament preparation retreats for students in their first and second years of preparing for Confirmation and First Holy Communion. There are four retreats each year for candidates, and we make sure one falls within the Advent season. Why are retreats so important? In addition to learning about the faith, retreats are an opportunity to further our relationship with Christ and experience in the faith in a way that’s different from learning a lesson. Retreats come in a variety of forms and our Catholic tradition has had many saints that promoted retreats and taking time away, especially in silence. Now, our sacrament preparation retreats are not exactly a time of silence in the same way (as you could imagine), but they are a time for students and parents/guardians to take a step out of day-to-day routine and reflect. Having one of these retreats in Advent is a reminder that the liturgical year fosters special times of reflection, silence, and eager waiting. Just like these candidates eagerly await receiving the sacraments this spring, we as a Church spend time in waiting this Advent. Please keep these candidates in prayer and I hope you have a fruitful Advent!
